Uninspired Employees Cost Employers Money!
When workers are not inspired, you will see complacency, declining morale and lower productivity. Absenteeism goes up when unhappy employees are down. So what can be done to stop this destructive cycle? Start by bringing your management team together for a closed door meeting. Ask them to objectively evaluate the company's morale. If they see it as anything but positive, get to the root of what they see as problems or reasons that their workers are not inspired. If you listen you will have a list of reasons that will probably fall into one or more of the following categories:
- Workers desire meaningful jobs; they want their efforts to make a difference
- They do not understand the company's purpose and how they fit into the solution
- Work conditions and/or equipment is lacking
- Personality issues with co-workers or management
- They want to feel appreciated and recognized for a job well done
Have your management team work on solving numbers 3, 4, and 5. Then gather all the employees and personally handle items 1 and 2 by communicating to them the company purpose and how you see their roles and the importance of reaching goals, individually and as a group. Once you have spread the word, it is time to act. Start with setting high standards that will inspire employees to excel. Have your department managers set up "systems" training to make sure everyone understands the best way to work to reach the goals. Have mini spiff programs (lunch, gift certificate to a movie, car wash) for employees who excel (build on their strengths) in any area of their work. A key is to give recognition in front of the work group when presenting the spiff reward. A lot of inspiration comes from one person serving as an example that can be imitated or learned from by their co-workers.
Usually, immediate results in attitudes and productivity are seen. But this is only the beginning. Another key to inspiring workers: make room for their visions. Many owners hold on too tightly to their visions and ignore the input of employees. Yes, you may have a system and you know it will provide the results you want, but don't squelch your worker's enthusiasm by not listening. Seeing the validity of employees' visions and incorporating them into your business system will not only help your workers' inspiration levels soar, but the business' vision will never stagnate because it will continually be modified by new input.
