Training and Improvement: the Cornerstones in the Development Process

This segment is the cornerstone in the development process and must begin on the first day the newly hired employee comes to work. To be effective, training must be presented on a frequent schedule, and it must provide or include the tools that are needed for the employee. Individuals learn in different methods and at different paces. Some need the material in written form, while others can understand the information given in a good verbal presentation. The best is interactive training with a well-structured message provided in a professional manner.

A Training Agenda

A detailed lesson plan with training aids for the year should be given to upper management for their approval and cooperation. Training should be a positive experience and a collaboration of ideas can assist instruction and show how to improve every task of the employee's job. Once a specific element of the system is approved by the trainer then each employee in attendance should demonstrate their competency with that task so every co-worker knows what is expected. This becomes the standard thereby making a definitive set of criteria that employees and management can see and test. This way the perception of 'what is expected' is less ambiguous and more measurable.

Training time can be invested to solve problems or situations that need solutions. This is a great time to act as a team by pooling resources and sharing ideas. This method not only gets faster and fresher solutions, but each member of the team has ownership in the solution and they know their opinions are valued and respected.

Learning Should Be Ongoing

Encourage employees to continue their education away from the workplace. Set up a scholarship or company participation program for employees who want to improve. The program should support college classes, industry training, or trade school education that offers programs that could be used at your business. When resources are provided to benefit the employee it shows the importance you place on education. It also shows that the company values and invests in the employee's work to better himself or herself. This is a great time to provide guidance and counseling to reach long-term goals at the company. Certain companies encourage or require the employee to bring in their grades to receive additional support and recognition.
