Health Options in the Workplace

Health and safety is about preventing people from being harmed by work or becoming ill through work. A sick employee is an expensive employee. There are many things that an employer can do to improve the working conditions and the health environment. Good health options at the workplace begin with a building in good repair that is clean, has good ventilation and is well-lit. The work environment should be smoke free and have areas for rest and taking breaks. Clean facilities and restrooms and appropriate first aid equipment must be accessible to all employees. Policies should be in place where employees must take time away from their work area to relax on their break or eat. Company-wide safety procedures should be reviewed periodically, as well as retraining personnel on company policy and general procedures. Policies must be established and practiced by everyone regarding issues such as absenteeism and coming to work when sick (colds, flu, fever, etc.).
